The Climate Change Women Initiative (CCWI) was founded in 2023 in Bugesera, Rwanda, as a response to the recognition that climate impacts are gendered. Formed by local women leaders, environmental activists, and development practitioners, CCWI aims to address vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change, especially in rural, agriculture-dependent communities.
Operating on the understanding that climate change exacerbates existing gender inequalities—particularly in regions like Bugesera where communities rely heavily on agriculture—CCWI works to empower women, recognizing their vital role in building resilient communities.
CCWI's approach includes capacity-building programs, advocacy for gender-responsive policies, grassroots resilience initiatives, and gender-disaggregated climate data research. Our key programs include the Women's Climate Leadership Hub, Eco-Livelihoods for Resilience, Climate Policy Advocacy, and the Knowledge & Data Hub.
Guided by core values of equity, resilience, participation, transparency, and innovation, we collaborate with government, NGOs, and local communities to create sustainable impact.

We employ participatory, gender-transformative strategies that engage local communities, foster partnerships, and emphasize adaptive management. Our programs aim to empower women with knowledge, leadership, and tools to build resilient communities.
Continuous monitoring, evaluation, and learning ensure our initiatives are effective, sustainable, and aligned with national development goals.
